As you prepare for graduating high school, you previously determine whether you go to college right away or take a year off. I know for a fact that this is a big decision for some. When you don't go to college right away after high school you're losing time. High school graduates that attend college right after high school tend to have a well knowledge mind. Also, they are used to the routine of attending school everyday. This is why high school graduates shouldn't take a year off before entering college.
Many say that it is better to take a year off before heading to college because not every high school graduate is ready for college at the age of 18. School counselors are here to help you 3 to 4 years in advance before going off to college. Counselors want to help you figure out what you want to be and where you want to be in the next however many years. School isn’t just about learning the basics, it’s also about figuring out what you want to be. This is why most schools have you take the ACT or PLAN test.
If you take a year off after high school you don’t get that initial college experience that your friends do. It also may be hard to get back in the swing of things. Like waking up for school at a certain time. A poorly planned gap year can be a big waist of time. There are pros and cons for not having a gap year. Some pros are knowledge won’t be lost throughout the gap year, you will be in college making new friends, time won’t go to waste, and most colleges prefer students to be accepted first and defer a year. The cons are that you will lose knowledge and it will be hard to get back in the swing of things.
Taking a gap year is a good thing and bad thing, it gives you more time to plan out what you want to do and you can also get a job to earn some money before going to college. Harvard and Princeton both encourage taking a gap year because they think high school graduates need a year of some much needed down time before heading off to college. But if you do take a gap year you can lose access to high school counselors, scholarship resources, and support from your friends.
Sometimes when students do take gap year, most might think that not being in school is fun and might not even want to go back to school. Most get jobs and end up staying and making an income. They end up becoming used to it too and don't even think about going back to school. All it takes is freedom for a person to not go back to school. Motivation is lost throughout the gap year.
People need to know that taking a gap year is not right. It's better to go straight to college fresh out of high school. Think about the future, what would happen if students did end up taking a gap year? High school graduates would realize that being in school is not that much fun. But it's better to go to college and earn a degree in what you are going to school for. If you end up taking a gap year and end up not going back to college, have fun with that because you're going to be missing out on the whole life experience, going to college, having fun with friends, earning a degree, and most of all succeeding at your life goals. So come on now, make the righ choice by going straight to college right after high school and NOT taking a gap year.
